Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF) batteries, also called VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid), are the standard choice for UPS systems. They come in two sub-types — AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) and GEL. Both are completely sealed, require zero electrolyte top-up and can be operated in any orientation.
SMF/VRLA batteries are available from 7Ah to 200Ah and are the most common battery type used with APC, Eaton, Exide and other UPS systems. They typically offer a design life of 3 to 10 years depending on the grade selected.
Tubular batteries use tubular positive plates, giving them a much higher cycle life compared to flat-plate batteries. They are the preferred choice for residential and commercial inverter applications in India, particularly where power cuts are frequent and deep discharge cycles are common.
Tubular batteries require periodic electrolyte top-up with distilled water, but they reward this maintenance with service lives of 5 to 8 years under Indian conditions. Exide and Amaron both offer excellent tubular battery ranges.
Lithium-ion batteries represent the next generation of UPS battery technology. They are significantly lighter, offer much longer cycle life (2000+ cycles) and charge faster than lead-acid alternatives. Leoch and other brands now offer Li-Ion battery modules designed as drop-in replacements for UPS systems.
