About Online UPS

What is a Double-Conversion Online UPS?

An online UPS — also known as a double-conversion UPS — operates by continuously converting incoming AC power to DC and then back to AC. Because your equipment always runs off the UPS inverter output, there is literally zero transfer time when mains power fails. The battery is continuously connected to the DC bus, so the switchover is instantaneous and completely seamless.

This topology also filters out all power quality problems — voltage fluctuations, frequency variations, harmonic distortion, sags, swells and spikes — delivering a perfectly clean, regulated sine wave to your equipment regardless of input power quality. This makes online UPS the preferred choice for server rooms, medical equipment, CNC machines, telecommunications, CCTV systems and any other application where momentary power interruptions or dirty power could cause damage or data loss.

Key Benefits of Online UPS

  • Zero transfer time — no switchover gap when mains fail
  • Pure sine wave output regardless of input quality
  • Complete isolation from mains — eliminates surges, spikes and harmonics
  • Wide input voltage range (typically 110V–300V) without battery drain
  • Stable output frequency even if input frequency drifts
  • Suitable for generator input — synchronises cleanly
  • Scalable battery runtime with external battery packs (EBM)
  • Remote monitoring via SNMP / USB / RS-232 on advanced models
  • High power factor (0.9–1.0 on modern units) means better efficiency

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes and no. In a double-conversion online UPS, the load always runs from the inverter output (which is powered by the DC bus). However, the rectifier is continuously charging the DC bus from mains power. The battery only supplies energy when mains power is lost. The battery is always connected and ready, but it is not fully discharging during normal operation — it is simultaneously being kept at full charge.
Yes. Online UPS systems have wide input voltage and frequency acceptance ranges, making them well-suited for generator input. The double-conversion topology isolates the load from any frequency or voltage instability produced by the generator during startup or under variable load. This is one of the key advantages of online UPS in locations with frequent power cuts and generator backup.
Most online UPS models support external battery packs or can be connected to a dedicated battery bank for extended runtime. With custom battery design, runtimes of 1, 2, 4 or even 8+ hours are achievable. Our engineers will calculate the exact number of batteries and battery bank size required to meet your specific runtime target.
Yes, installation and commissioning is part of our service. Our certified engineers handle everything from site survey and cable sizing to physical installation, battery connection, load testing and handover training. For large projects (10kVA and above), we also provide as-built documentation and commissioning certificates.
